History of SEO
The SEO Mission: To prepare young people of color to lead by example in their families, communities and careers.
Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO) is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1963 as one of New York City's first mentoring programs for high school students of color. Over the past four decades SEO has expanded its programs to benefit more than 5,000 young people, helping them develop throughout high school, college, and their careers. SEO has grown into an established nonprofit organization with offices in New York City and London, more than 50 full-time staff, and programs that serve over 1,000 students, parents, and alumni each year.
The SEO Program recruits, selects and trains outstanding college students of color for summer internships that lead to full-time jobs with investment banks, corporate law firms and other leading global companies. Historically, more than 80% of interns receive full-time job offers from SEO corporate partners. What begins as a 10-week summer internship turns into a lifelong networking opportunity and a resource base for SEO alumni through every step of their professional growth.
SEO is an alumni-driven organization. SEO's alumni are active in all areas of the organization. Our major strength is that our graduates are passing on strategies for success to the next generation. This mentoring is available not only to current students and interns, but to all alumni as we work together to prepare young people of color to lead by example in their families, communities, and careers.
In 2006, Mr. Thomas G. Tsao, one of the partners of Gobi Partners and also a SEO alumnus of Class 1991, introduced SEO program to China. He believes that the preeminent Chinese students should also enjoy the infinite opportunities provided by SEO. He has been working diligently as a mentor as well as a sponsor of the program. Gobi Partners is also the first sponsor in the People's Republic of China to provide this opportunity to Chinese students.
